| Fondazione Gottfried Matthaes - A piece of carved, sawn or painted wood does not become a work of art only because it has been established that it has a certain degree of antiquity. It must be judged as such by an experienced and reputable art historian. Likewise, an object defined as "art" by an expert opinion turns into just a piece of carved wood if it can be demonstrated that the expert's dating was erred. An art object is genuine, and will be so in the future, only if the style, technique and artist, if known, coincide with the age of the object. These requisites are indispensable. Age, which is the decisive characteristic, can be established only by means of scientific methods and research. The spectroscopic dating method was developed by the laboratory of the Art Collector's Museum to provide collectors, restorers, art galleries and museums with objective data on which to base appraisals of art objects in their possession. |
